Photography

I’ve trekked through jungles in search of elusive lemurs, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, attended the Golden Eagle Festival in far western Mongolia, spent a week living with the San in Botswana, and accompanied herds of elephants on their annual migration along the KaZa trans-frontier from Botswana through Zimbabwe. These adventures (and more) have given me incredible photo ops. I’ve also had the great good fortune to make portraits of the friendly and hospitable women, men, and children I meet along the way. They tell me their stories, which in turn inspire my writing.

Over the years, I’ve learned to let my subjects decide how they wish to be photographed. Some are fine with letting me take many shots until they relax and forget I’m there. Others prefer to pose proudly, regally—a formal portrait. And sometimes, it all comes down to one shot, one chance.
